Getting specific medical information

We want to keep you informed as much as possible. The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule protects the privacy of personal health information so caregivers are limited in the information they can give, unless the patient, the patient’s legal guardian or legal representative has authorized the doctor(s) and staff members to provide specific information.

We know it can be frustrating when you can’t get the medical information you’d like to have so we encourage you and your family talk about this prior to coming to the hospital. If the patient consents to sharing the information, there must be written authorization in the chart.
