  • Karla NugentKarla Nugent is in her second year as Chair of the Avista Hospital Foundation Board, where she enjoys helping the Foundation achieve its goals of healthcare excellence and improving the lives of people in our community. Karla is a founding partner and Chief Business Development Officer at Weifield Group Contracting, a leading electrical contracting company with 300 employees serving clients in Colorado and Wyoming, since 2002. 

    In her role at Weifield, Karla is responsible for the company’s Business Development, Marketing, Sales, and Preconstruction departments and passionately advocates for a better construction workforce and industry.  She ensures profitability and growth via business strategy, strategic alliances, public relations, and marketing efforts. Prior to starting Weifield, Karla spearheaded the growth efforts of three leading organizations in the training/seminar, wholesale beauty, and data center/managed hosting industries – serving as departmental head and Chief Operations Officer within these companies. In a similar fashion, her own company, Weifield, thrives under her leadership winning Denver Post Top Workplaces 5 years running.

    Karla has a B.A. in Psychology from Colorado State University and lives in Lafayette, Colorado, with her husband, Jack, and her two children, Jackson and Elli. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, organizing philanthropic and faith-based activities, and traveling.

    Wayne AndersonMr. Anderson is the senior Executive Leadership Coach and Founder of the Leadership Science Institute, LLC and is Certified Master Coach (CMC). He is a senior executive with equal blend of technical, business, managerial and public sector skills developed during experience with several "Fortune 500" companies and local municipalities.

    He has extensive experience in helping his clients to start, expand and grow their businesses through coaching and training. In addition, he helps them to train and develop their professional staffs. He possesses the unique ability to help his clients attract, retain, develop and motivate outstanding management and professional leaders.

    Mr. Anderson was an Adjunct Professor in Business and Management at Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado where he taught marketing, sales, introduction to business and business communication courses.

    He was a publicly elected official. He held the positions of City Council Member and County Commissioner for the City and County of Broomfield in the State of Colorado.

    He is the author of the books, "Unwrapping the CIO: Demystifying the Chief Information Officer Position" (iUniverse Publishing: September, 2006), "Powerful People Are Powerful IT Professionals: Your Daily Guide to Becoming a Powerful Information Systems Person" (iUniverse Publishing: January, 2007), "I Am Unemployed … Now What Do I Do?: An Organized Approach to Becoming Employed" (iUniverse Publishing: June, 2011) and "I Am Unemployed Christian… Now What Do I Do?: An Organized Approach to Becoming Employed Christian" (Westbow Press: March, 2013).

    He lives in Westminster, Colorado.

    Dennis Barts joined Avista as Chief Executive Officer in July of 2013 after serving as CEO of Valley Hospital and Deaconess Medical Center, part of the Rockwood Health System in Spokane, Wash. While there, Dennis led his colleagues in achieving Joint Commission recognition as a Center of Excellence in Total Joint Surgery and was awarded "Top Hospital" recognition from the Joint Commission for surgical and pneumonia care. Dennis has also served as CEO at hospitals in Ponca City, Okla.; Jourdanton, Texas; and Fallbrook, Calif.

    Dennis received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich.; his Master in Exercise Physiology degree from Iowa State University and his Master of Business Administration degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

    Dennis and his wife Becky have one son and a granddaughter.

    Chris Carey

    Christopher D. Carey as President of the Rocky Mountain Adventist Healthcare Foundation leads fundraising for the Adventist Hospitals of Centura Health.

    Prior to Centura Health, Chris served as vice president for advancement and strategic planning for Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee where he launched a $75 million campaign surpassing past accomplishments by 500%.  He also pioneered work in Ghana to grow the first accredited private university in the country, Valley View University.  Chris has served in various foundation roles at several nonprofits with fundraising leadership experience in Europe, Asia, South America and across the States.

    Chris holds a Masters of Science in Nonprofit Management and Leadership, and dual bachelor degrees in Business Administration and Public Relations from Andrews University.  Since 1998, Chris has held the distinction of being a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE).

    In his free time, Chris enjoys running, volunteering, exploring big ideas, cross-cultural exchange, outdoor activities, planting anything that grows, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

    Kelli EhrhardtKelli Ehrhardt is Vice President and Relationship Manager for the Metro Commercial Banking team at Vectra Bank Colorado.  

    Ehrhardt brings more than 23 years of experience in business banking and commercial lending to her clients, with 14 of those years at Vectra Bank. While her expertise is with businesses with annual sales revenues between $10MM to $50MM, she seeks to build strong relationships with new or existing customers through commercial banking sales and service activities. She manages a large loan and treasury management portfolio and focuses on complex depository and treasury management clients. Ehrhardt is a proactive banker with a proven track record of providing outstanding customer service.

    Ehrhardt’s commitments extend well beyond the bank through her dedication to the community. She is an advisory board member and committee member at A Precious Child non-profit, and serves on the board of the Westminster Legacy Foundation.

    She received her Bachelor in Business Management degree from the University of Phoenix, a graduate of the Metro North Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class 2015-2016, and a Certified Credit Professional. She is also affiliated with Naturally Boulder Trade Organization, CASA of Adams & Broomfield County and Adams County Economic Development (ACED).

    Ehrhardt is a Colorado native, born and raised in Arvada. With her husband and two children, she enjoys traveling and cooking.

    Laura HicksLaura Hicks joined Avista as the Director of Imaging in 2011 after nine years at Porter Adventist Hospital. Laura has held positions as the Service Line Director for Oncology at Porter and Kettering Medical Center, the Service Line Director for Ophthalmology at Porter, and Imaging Director at other facilities. Laura is passionate about program design and development, having established numerous successful service lines and new programs. Of special interest to her is Avista’s further expansion of its excellent services to women and its desire to become a destination center for women’s health.   

    Laura has a Masters in Health Care Administration (MHA) from Loma Linda University and a BS in Biology from Pacific Union College. Laura is also a board member of the Brighton Adventist Academy and the Avista Foundation. She is married and enjoys spending her free time traveling, scuba diving and getting away to the mountains.   

    Chuck is President and CEO of Grey Mountain Charter Financing where he directs the firm’s goal of solving the financing problem for charter schools in their need for facilities.  Grey Mountain has provided over $2B in financing for charter schools across the country.  Chuck has also served as Chief Financial Officer of various companies over the last 25 years as well as Market President of Sunflower Bank and gets excited about providing leadership in both human capital as well as the financial well-being of a company.  Chuck believes that the most important investment a company can make is in people that care.

    Chuck is a graduate of TCU and his personal interests include family, faith, golf, and TCU football.  Chuck has spent extensive time in the healthcare world as a patient and is excited to contribute to the Avista Foundation Board.

    Heather KnightHeather Knight is a vice president and general manager, leading three divisions within Medtronic’s Surgical Innovations business unit: Obesity & Metabolic Health; Colorectal Health and Gynecologic Health. In this role, Heather has global responsibility for all aspects these businesses – with focus on patient awareness & access, market development, therapy innovation and value based healthcare. Previously, Heather served as global vice president of Marketing for the $1.6B General Surgical Products business with responsibility for all portfolio, strategy and growth initiatives that support the worldwide business—including a strong connection to all commercialization efforts in each key region across the world.

    Heather entered the medical device industry as a sales representative with Graphic Controls in 1998, joining Covidien as part of the Tyco Healthcare acquisition that same year.  During her tenure, she has held numerous roles of increasing responsibilities in both sales and marketing leadership across multiple businesses in Tyco Healthcare, Covidien and now Medtronic.

    Prior to joining the Surgical Innovations business unit, Heather was U.S. Vice President of Sales for Covidien’s Monitoring and OR division.

    Heather graduated from the University of Buffalo with a bachelor's degree in Biology.   She recently relocated to Boulder, CO with her husband Brian and two children - Lily, 12 and Evan, 10.

    Shannon KnobelShannon Knobel grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey and Carmel, Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Upon graduation, Shannon joined PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP where her clients included large multinational manufacturing companies. Professional opportunities brought Shannon and her husband, Jeff, to Colorado, where she ultimately launched as successful consulting practice specializing in financial reporting and accounting software design.

    An expatriate assignment for Jeff sent them to Germany. Shannon quickly adapted to her new home through her involvement in the American Women's Club, the inspiration for MOD Moms, LLC which she founded upon returning to Colorado. MOD Moms has been an educational resource for moms, providing social and philanthropic opportunities to the families by partnering with community businesses. MOD Moms support of “Crayons to Calculators” introduced Shannon to Impact for Education where she has served as the Chair of the Live and Silent Auction for Razzle Dazzle for many years.

    Shannon, Jeff and their two sons, Nick and Mike, live in Superior. The Knobel Family is extremely involved in our community, especially school activities and sporting events, particularly competitive swimming and soccer.

    Scott KuehnScott Kuehn, Principal and Chief Operating Officer at Treanor|H+L, a design firm providing services in architecture, planning, interior design, historic preservation, civil engineering and landscape architecture. The firm currently employs over 150 professionals and support staff in 8 offices located in Denver, Colorado Springs, Lawrence, Topeka, Kansas City, St. Louis, Dallas and Atlanta.

    Scott has over 34 years of experience in all phases of the business of architecture and is a leader in the industry and his community. His leadership style embraces collaboration and communication and strives to make a meaningful difference for both his firm and the firm’s clients. Scott is passionate about design and how design will ultimately meet the goals set forth thru insightful client collaboration. He has been involved in many significant projects including the recently completed Saint Joseph’s Hospital for SCL Health. His project experience includes work in healthcare, education and advanced industry markets, Scott is an active member of the American Institute of Architects and is past Chair of the AIA Practice Management Advisory Group and AIA/AGC Joint Committee.

    Scott has been a Denver resident since 1982, arriving looking for sunshine and snow after graduating from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Scott raised two boys that also reside and work in the Denver area. In his free time he now enjoys golf, mountain and road biking, traveling, concerts and cooking.

    Kate PerreaultKate joined CoBiz Insurance in 2009 as an employee benefits advisor. Prior to joining CoBiz, Kate spent 15 years with 2 prominent national insurance carriers specializing in employer sponsored health and welfare plans. She was responsible for the overall new business sales, retention and profitability of the Denver regional sales office which included a multi-state territory and oversight of 5 sales executives. In 2009, she was presented with an opportunity to join CoBiz Insurance and represent employers in the strategic planning of their health and welfare strategies.

    In her role at CoBiz, Kate is responsible for new business development and retention of the clients she serves. In this position, she evaluates, coordinates and makes recommendations to shape strategy and direction for employee benefit programs. She is passionate about ensuring that her client’s energy and commitment to the implementation and development of a unique corporate health strategy results in a sound return on their investment. Her multi-year approach is centered around each organization and its unique culture, environment and business objectives.

    Kate holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Tennessee. She and her husband Mike have 2 children, Ben and Sydney. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, skiing, watching UT football, reading and spending time in the mountains.

    Ronald Robinson MD

    Dr. Robinson currently serves as Chief Medical Officer at Avista, where he has practiced anesthesiology since 2003. He received his MD and MPH degrees from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1993, and completed his anesthesiology residency at UT Houston in 1997. He received his MBA from The University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School in 2015.

    In addition to private practice, Dr. Robinson has served as a flight surgeon for both NASA's Johnson Space Center and the Texas Air National Guard. He has educated medical students and residents as clinical faculty at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Bradenton. He has participated actively in research, and is published in the fields of physics, aviation medicine, and pain medicine. Dr. Robinson has also owned and operated multiple small businesses involving aviation, finance, and real estate.

    Nicole Salter new photoNicole Milo (Salter), Chief Development Officer at Avista Adventist Hospital, attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Nicole became passionate about philanthropy at an early age as a dedicated volunteer throughout high school and college. Her philanthropic spirit was evident in roles as Development Director for Holy Family High School in Broomfield, Colorado, and as the Vice President of Development for A Precious Child, a Broomfield based non-profit.

    Nicole is a very firm believer in stewardship and the philosophy of time, talent, and treasure as equally important ways to give back. Nicole works very closely with the Avista Foundation Board of Directors to create lasting partnerships with our donors for the benefit of Avista Adventist Hospital. She is very passionate about expanding the impact of Avista Adventist Hospital and helping to facilitate its desire to become a Destination Center for Women’s Health in Northern Colorado.

    Nicole married this summer and has three teenage children. She is a Board Member of the Metro North Chamber of Commerce, an active Junior Achievement volunteer, and PTO President of her children’s school. In her free time, Nicole enjoys spending time with her family, watching her children play sports, and hiking outdoors with her husband.  

    Joe Slavik photoJoe joined Howell Construction in 1995 as Vice-President and became President in 2001. He has been instrumental in transforming Howell from a small family run business to a leader in the market niches of Technology, Life Sciences, Health Care and General Commercial.

    During his tenure at Howell, Joe has become known for creating construction solutions that integrate with client’s strategic business objectives. His consultative style has helped Howell form Strategic Partnerships and long-term alliances with many leading Colorado companies, including CenturyLink, Hosting.com, Amgen, TerumoBCT and Janus. Additional client relationships that have developed during his tenure include: UMB Bank, Lockheed Martin, Verizon Wireless, Wells Fargo, Agilent Technologies and many other significant Colorado companies.

    Joe is currently a board member for the Associated General Contractors and an active member in the Colorado Y.P.O. chapter, as well as on the Board of Governors for the Metro Denver Economic Development Council. He has been an active contributor with the “Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Metro Denver,” spending seven years on the Associate Board and the last three years on the Board of Directors.

    Joe holds a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Nebraska and an M.B.A. from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

    Joe, his wife Jenna, and children Jason, Megan and Rachel enjoy spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks where there is lots of time spent on the water. Joe also enjoys skiing, hunting, archery and playing golf.

    Mark StrynarMark has been in the financial services industry for more than 25 years at firms including Morgan Stanley and UBS, joining Merrill Lynch in 2014. He prides himself on thoroughly understanding the priorities of high-net worth individuals and families, providing them with disciplined, goals-based planning and outcome oriented recommendations and strategies with great attention to detail. 

    Mark works closely with clients to help identify their prominent goals and needs including asset allocation, education funding, retirement income planning, tax minimization strategies and estate planning services, then dedicates himself to crafting unique financial strategies to aid clients in the pursuit of desired outcomes while building, managing and preserving their wealth for multiple generations. In addition to the investment insights of Merrill Lynch, Mark can provide access to banking, credit and lending from Bank of America.

    Mark holds the Accredited Wealth Management AdvisorSM (AWMA®) designation from the College for Financial Planning. He is a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.A. in Art History. Mark currently serves on the board of the Boulder Jewish Community Center. Mark and his family live in Boulder where they enjoy an outdoor lifestyle - skiing, hiking, biking and trail running with their dogs.

    Aaron WiebelhausAaron Wiebelhaus grew up in northwestern Iowa and went to college at University of Northern Iowa. Upon graduating, he and his wife moved to Dallas, Texas to start their careers.  Aaron was soon was transferred to Colorado and fell in love with the lifestyle and climate.

    Because of family reasons, they moved back to Des Moines, Iowa in 2001. During that time, Aaron went back to graduate school at the University of Iowa and received an MBA. His new job in Des Moines eventually led to a career with Turner Construction. We were eventually transferred to Kansas City, Missouri and five years ago back to Denver. His current position with Turner Construction is running the Denver office as the business manager.

    Along the way during those past 15 years, Aaron and his wife were blessed with three boys. Their ages are 12, 10, and 6 years old. The children consume nearly all of their free time, but the family tries to spend every possible opportunity in the mountains camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing.
